Topic : Living as Light in a Dark World - Understanding our identity as light
Text: Ephesians 5:8-14
"For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleeps, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light."
Reflection :
Before knowing Christ, scripture describes us as being in darkness. But when we come to Christ, everything changes.
Paul reminds believers, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”
Notice that the scripture says we were in darkness, this points to the condition of a life separated from God. Sin can influence our thoughts, desires, attitudes, and choices until things that should trouble our conscience begin to look normal.
But Christ brings us into the light and the light exposes what darkness conceals.
This is why walking with God sometimes makes us uncomfortable and His word shows us attitudes, habits, motives, and behaviours that we may have previously ignored.
When God's light reveals something wrong in us, the right response is not to run from Him or pretend that nothing is wrong we are expected to bring it to Him, confess it, and allow Him to change us.
Living in the light means being honest before God, refusing to maintain a false image while secretly holding on to things that do not honour Him, and also means allowing God's Word to guide our decisions.
The light of Christ does not expose us to destroy us; it exposes what needs healing and transformation. So, don't be afraid when God's Word reveals areas that need correction. Exposure can be the beginning of transformation.
Key Point :
Is there any area of my life that I am avoiding because I know God wants me to change it?
Prayer :
Father, search my heart and reveal anything that does not please You. Give me the humility to accept Your correction and the grace to walk in Your light in Jesus name
